NEW EDUCATION POLICY: ANALYSIS

The National Education Policy 2020 was approved by the Union Cabinet on July 29, 2020.

Dr. K. Kasturirangan, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, chaired the Committee for Draft National Education Policy, which submitted its report to the Ministry of Human Resources Development on December 15, 2018.

School education is covered in Part I; higher education is covered in Part II; other key areas of emphasis (Part III) include adult education and Indian languages, and implementing the policy is discussed in Part IV.

ABOUT THE NEP 2020 POLICY, WHAT IS THE OPINION OF THE PUBLIC AND THE STUDENTS?

After examining my survey results, I conclude that many students encourage some features and many feel that implementing this system would be difficult for them to accomplish. The Covid 19 pandemic is still being blamed by some students for the decrease in education quality. In their view, the present method of getting a professional education through online classes and semesters allowed a student incapable of getting a professional qualification. Moreover, they say that the current situation gives disqualified students or those who do not possess the necessary qualifications an opportunity to obtain a professional career. Despite the government providing some guidelines to improve the education system, they argue that there are still various ways for students to fail. The majority of Indians in private schools and international schools believe that the education system is better than the education in a government school, as some students also mention the present education system as a privatized education system. The education fees charged by private and international schools are out of reach of many middle-class families in India. Despite the government's effort to limit school and college fees, there are still a few educational establishments that charge fees beyond the government-imposed cap. A few students shared that the government had issued the permit without making sure the institution complied with its requirements. Some students indicated that educational facilities are prone to accidents.

UNDER NEP 2020, WHAT CHANGES WILL BE MADE?

NEP 2020 is the new policy after the 1968 and 1986 education policies that aim to reform both the quality of teachers and the quality of students. Student empowerment is the main goal of NEP 2020. A 34-year-old national education policy has been replaced by this 2020 policy. The new policy includes ten significant changes.

These include:

1. At age 3, children begin schooling in a kindergarten or Anganwadi.

2. Since the transition to 5+3+3+4 from 10+2 there has been a change in the educational structure.

3. In the modern world, science is no longer separated from the arts and commerce is no longer rigid.

4. From class 6 onwards, apprenticeships and vocational education schemes have been implemented. By participating in the internship program, students gain knowledge concerning the work environment as well as social and practical skills.

5. A new board exam model has been introduced under the NEP. Although the class 10th and 12th board exams continue, the format has changed, and the focus of the exam has switched to evaluating students' core subject knowledge rather than the syllabus.

6. NEXT 2020 reinstated the new undergraduate program system of four years.

7. 50% of the total enrolment ratio was the target of the major reforms by 2035.

8. All forms of the graduation program will use the Common College Entrance Test.

9. Separate committees will be established to regulate college fees and ensure that colleges do not charge more than the fixed cap. The college fees will be set by the government.

10. A new education structure will replace the MPhil program and provide instruction in mother tongue and other languages.

Summary:

As the current education system and the expectations of the students are taken into consideration, it is believed that NEP 2020 will bring a revolutionary change in the educational sector in India, as well as open greater potential for a better literacy rate. Furthermore, this NEP 2020 prevents students between the ages of 3 and 18 from dropping out of school. Additionally, this enables students to pursue an unrestricted education system. There are students who are looking forward to the changes and others who are not, but according to my observation it's the right time to make major changes to the existing system, and NEP2020 will be the first policy to include a variety of changes that will benefit them. It is the best element of the policy that they aim at equipping Indian students with universal knowledge, which will allow them to take their careers to the global horizon.
