Ways to increase your child's critical thinking skills

EXPLORING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Today's children will need to be able to think critically to succeed in the future. A child today must know much more than simply repeating facts; they need to be critical thinkers capable of analysing data, comparing and contrasting, drawing inferences, and generating higher-order thinking skills.

ENCOURAGING THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN CHILDREN

Your daily interactions of talking to your child, asking open-ended questions, letting them experiment, and solving problems can help build critical thinking skills.

Following are the ways to increase your child’s critical thinking skills:-

Develop a reading habit

You cannot connect with the world and yourself better than by reading. Kids who read more become more conscious of their words, circumstances, emotions, and stories. Reading increases his brain's ability to capture and store information needed for learning. The kid should analyse the story and portray the situation in which it takes place, showing them the difference between good and bad.

Ask questions

You should encourage your child to ask questions if he or she enjoys doing so. Having a child learn from the experiences of the elders is a very naturally occurring form of learning, and as a youngster, they are able to identify with and trust the information they are given from them. The child should be asked other questions about the topic in addition to just answering the question, moving from just "what" and "when" to "why" and "how".

Problem-solving

Your child's ability to solve problems will determine how you motivate him. A child will be able to develop critical thinking through this. Allow them to see that they are capable of answering questions.

Make an effort to understand a child's doubts and questions by listening to them and asking them questions. Correcting the facts is always possible, but it requires initiative. In addition, listening to a child's opinions and solutions will help him build up the ability to make decisions.

Responsibilize

A child must learn to work outside of his or her comfort zone at a young age. Put them in a position to solve problems and seek solutions by giving them responsibilities to think about. These are some examples of giving your child something to think about and do.When they need help, let them feel like they can do the task and leave them to figure out how. For a child, there is nothing more rewarding than the trust he receives from his parents. Imprinting this on a child is a good thing.

Learning is best done through playing

The importance of playtime for children cannot be overstated. A child can navigate through their experimentation and learning by playing games with friends, solving puzzles, solving riddles, and playing board games. IQ can be boosted this way. We should encourage kids to have healthy playtime since they learn skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and creativity during their playtime.

We can make our children more confident by bringing in small changes to their routine that will help them solve their problems. By starting when the child is young, you can encourage his or her development of independent thinking, intelligence, and a broad range of interests.
