COVID -19 AND DISTANCE LEARNING
EFFECT ON STUDENTS-
It is first and foremost a health crisis that has reached epidemic proportions. It is a fact that schools and universities have been closing in many countries (rightly). Policymakers are faced with a dilemma as they decide whether or not to close schools (to reduce contact and save lives) or keep them open (to help workers remain employed and maintain the economy). Most families around the world are experiencing serious interruptions in their lives during the short term: home schooling not only affects the productivity of parents but also affects the social development of their children. An untested and unprecedented level of online teaching is taking place. The assessment process for students is also moving online and is a full-blown trial and error process. There have been many cancelled assessments. Moreover, these interruptions will not only be a short-term problem but can have long-term consequences for the affected cohorts.
Effects on education:
To increase skills, the best policy is to send students to school. Although school can be fun and raise social skills and social awareness, from an economic perspective, the main reason for a child to attend school is that it increases his or her ability. The effects of being absent from school extend even to a relatively short time in school. Can we estimate the degree of learning disruption caused by COVID-19? Students around the world are affected not only by the closure of schools, colleges, and universities but are also affected by a key assessment period, which causes many exams to be postponed or cancelled.
Many internal assessments have been cancelled because they are perceived as less important. In fact, their purpose is to inform parents and teachers about the child's progress. If the information is lost, it leads to an underestimate of a child's potential or to the inability to recognize learning deficits.
Covid-19 is a virus that without differentiating will alter the lifestyles of its victims. No one would have predicted it. As a result of Covid-19, many changes occurred in our world and everyone took some time to adjust. Covid-19 affected schools and educational institutions everywhere, resulting in their closure.
Initially, most governments closed schools temporarily in order to minimize the consequences of Covid-19. There were a few grades that were reopened, which led to an increase in infection rates, and then it was shut down again.
In spite of the school closures, students are still attending their classes through various education initiatives, such as online classrooms and radio programs. On the other hand, it is a positive development, but a lot of students who lack the resources to attend online classes suffer as a result. The gadgets needed for online classes are hard to come by for many students.
Having only taught on Blackboard, Chalk, books, and in classrooms for many years, these teachers are mostly new to this digital teaching, but they are adapting well to it and enabling their students to succeed.
COVID-19's Impact on Students:
MERITS-
Aside from the vast jobs, life, and economic losses, there is no significant benefit. But speaking of children, there are some advantages.
- In addition to studying, students can also pursue other interests. Do some craftwork and watch some movies by staying in and not going out.
- As there is ample time to spend with grandparents, cousins, mothers, fathers, and other relatives (if possible, as per the government's guidelines), this is the time to do so. The majority of people work from home these days. Meeting with relatives does not require stepping outside of the house. Talk to them and build a better relationship by picking up the phone and calling.
- By avoiding transportation and prayer time, playing sports, and chatting with friends, time can be saved. Taking online classes for five to six hours each week. The average student spends 10 hours in class. By avoiding watching movies and playing mobile games, we can get more time for self-study.
DEMERITS-
No exams, the grades are determined by internals; there are all kinds of disadvantages. They may be negatively affected in the future. The child's future is going to be shaped by these factors. In conclusion, I would like to point out that students are missing school and college days. To prevent situations like those that occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic, I hope the government puts clear directions on education as early as possible.
The vast majority of poor students cannot afford laptops and computers; all these naive students think there should not be such disparity in education.
